Ever worry about all those expensive pieces of jewelry you aren’t taking on vacation with you? Knowing the proper places to hide them in case of a break in will put your mind at ease. Here are our 10 favorite places:
1. Under the washer or dryer.
Chances are, if someone breaks in they won’t be digging under your washer or dryer for valuables. They will just assume there’s nothing under there except lint or loose change. Simply place items in a ziplock bag and slide it just out of sight but not out of reach.
2. In a box of crackers
No thief is going to steal a box of saltine crackers out of the pantry. Again, place jewelry into a ziplock bag and into a box of crackers or even cereal.
3. Top of the cabinet
If your kitchen cupboards don’t touch the ceiling and there is a lip, this is a good place to safely hide jewelry.
4. A nail behind clothes
Hanging clothes in the closet provide excellent cover. A nail in the wall or even a push pin makes a simple way to hide necklaces. The clothes left behind will block the view of them and no one will know they are there.
5. Suit jacket pocket
Any jacket pocket will do, preferably one on the inside of the jacket. Just place your jewelry in a bag inside the pocket.
6. Old cell phone box
An old cell phone, like a flip phone, box is unlikely to have a phone in it. Or a phone worth taking. Therefore, a thief is unlikely to bother it. Just make sure it’s not an expensive smart phone box. That might catch attention and be picked up and opened.
7. Linen closet
No one breaks in to your home and wants to steal your towels. Fold jewelry into a towel and place it in your linen closet.
8. Hidden catch boxes
Those fun Chinese puzzle boxes with a hidden catch are great places to hide small pieces such as earrings. Complex ones with non-obvious catches won’t be given a second glance. Too much time to figure out, and the only thing on a thief’s mind is get in and out as fast as possible.
9. Pant pockets
Just like a jacket pocket, pant pockets are a good place to hide jewelry.
10. Safety deposit box
A safety deposit box at the bank is probably one of the safest places for your jewelry while you are on vacation or out of town. No one but you has access to it and unlike your home, it can’t be broken in to.
